SIM

The Subscriber Identity Module, commonly known as a SIM card, is an essential smartcard required for operating a mobile phone. It serves as the primary means to identify and authenticate a mobile subscriber. Besides its primary function, the SIM card also offers storage space for personal data like contact lists and text messages.

Each subscriber is uniquely identified by an International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and a linked telephone number. The SIM card has facilitated the separation of the mobile phone from the subscriber’s identity, allowing subscribers to use any phone with their account simply by inserting their SIM card.

SIM cards come in two sizes: the original credit card size and a smaller version, which is about the size of a chip on most credit cards. The smaller version is predominantly used in modern mobile phones.

Security for SIM card use is reinforced by a Personal Identification Number (PIN), ranging from 4 to 8 digits. If the wrong PIN is entered four times consecutively, the SIM card becomes blocked. To unblock it, a PIN Unblocking Key (PUK), an 8-digit code known to the authorized user and provided by the service provider, is required.

In recent times, an embedded SIM (eSIM) has also become available, offering an alternative to traditional SIM cards.
