WINNER

WINNER, which stands for “Wireless World Initiative New Radio,” is a research initiative in Europe aimed at developing a new radio interface for the era around 2010. This project was a part of the European Union’s Sixth Framework Programme, strategically aligned with the goal of advancing “Mobile and Wireless Systems beyond 3G.”

The primary focus of the WINNER project was to pioneer radio technology advancements for mobile communication systems that surpass the capabilities of the third generation (3G). This endeavor is intricately linked with the evolution of systems beyond the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) standards, which are the global benchmarks for 3G technologies. The next phase in this evolution, often referred to as IMT-Advanced, represents the progression towards more advanced and capable wireless communication systems.

A key aim of the WINNER project was to design a versatile radio interface suitable for use in various environments, from high-mobility wide areas to low-mobility local areas. The project set ambitious data rate targets for these environments:

  • For wide area, high mobility environments, such as wireless access on the move, the target data rate was around 100 Mbps.
  • In local area, low mobility settings, which cater to local connectivity and nomadic usage, the goal was to achieve data rates around 1 Gbps.

Through these objectives, WINNER sought to significantly enhance the speed and efficiency of wireless networks, paving the way for faster, more reliable mobile communication technologies that could meet the demands of a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
