UMTS band

The UMTS UTRA FDD (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access – Frequency Division Duplex) frequency bands are specific frequency ranges allocated for UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) based on W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) technology. These bands are used for both uplink (transmissions from the mobile device to the network) and downlink (transmissions from the network to the mobile device) communications. Here’s an explanation of the defined UTRA FDD frequency bands:

  1. Band I (UMTS2100):
    • Uplink: 1920 – 1980 MHz
    • Downlink: 2110 – 2170 MHz
    • Remarks: This band is commonly known as UMTS2100 and is part of the IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunications-2000) or UMTS core band. It is widely used for UMTS services.
  2. Band II:
    • Uplink: 1850 – 1910 MHz
    • Downlink: 1930 – 1990 MHz
    • Remarks: This band is associated with the GSM1900 band and is used for UMTS services in regions where GSM1900 is deployed.
  3. Band III (UMTS1800):
    • Uplink: 1710 – 1785 MHz
    • Downlink: 1805 – 1880 MHz
    • Remarks: Also known as UMTS1800, this band corresponds to the GSM1800 band and is utilized for UMTS services in regions where GSM1800 is in operation.
  4. Band IV (UMTS1700):
    • Uplink: 1710 – 1755 MHz
    • Downlink: 2110 – 2155 MHz
    • Remarks: This band is used in conjunction with the UMTS core band (Band I) and is often employed to provide additional capacity.
  5. Band V (UMTS850):
    • Uplink: 824 – 849 MHz
    • Downlink: 869 – 894 MHz
    • Remarks: Primarily allocated for UMTS services in the United States.
  6. Band VI (UMTS800):
    • Uplink: 830 – 840 MHz
    • Downlink: 875 – 885 MHz
    • Remarks: Reserved for UMTS services in Japan.
  7. Band VII (UMTS2600):
    • Uplink: 2500 – 2570 MHz
    • Downlink: 2620 – 2690 MHz
    • Remarks: Part of the IMT-2000 extension band, this band provides additional capacity for UMTS.
  8. Band VIII (UMTS900):
    • Uplink: 880 – 915 MHz
    • Downlink: 925 – 960 MHz
    • Remarks: Corresponds to the GSM900 band and is used for UMTS services in regions where GSM900 is prevalent.
  9. Band IX (UMTS1700):
    • Uplink: 1749.9 – 1784.9 MHz
    • Downlink: 1844.9 – 1879.9 MHz
    • Remarks: A Japanese version of UMTS1700 used in Japan.
  10. Band X (Extended UMTS1700):
    • Uplink: 1710 – 1770 MHz
    • Downlink: 2110 – 2170 MHz
    • Remarks: An extended version of UMTS1700 with additional spectrum for UMTS services.

These UTRA FDD frequency bands are defined by 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and serve as the foundation for UMTS-based mobile communication services, offering coverage and capacity across different regions and countries worldwide
