NPA (Numbering Plan Area), refers to the system used to organize and manage phone numbers. The NPA is represented by a three-digit number known as the area code. This code helps to identify the geographic region where the phone number was initially registered.
Each phone number has a total of seven digits, which are unique within that specific area code or NPA. The seven-digit number is divided into two parts:
- NXX: The first three digits, which usually indicate the local exchange or service provider.
- XXXX: The last four digits, which are unique to each telephone line within the local exchange.
Together, the area code and the seven-digit phone number (NXX-XXXX) form a complete 10-digit phone number, ensuring that every telephone line is uniquely identifiable within its assigned geographic region. This system allows for the efficient allocation and routing of phone calls within and between different regions.
