EDGE

Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) is a technology that enhances existing GSM and D-AMPS networks to increase data capacity. It’s a member of the IMT-2000 family but considered intermediate in Europe. EDGE can improve General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) as Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) and High-Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) as Enhanced Circuit-Switched Data (ECSD). It achieves this by introducing a new modulation scheme, 8PSK, increasing the number of error correction coding schemes, and employing link adaptation. The maximum data rate with all eight time slots used can reach 473.6 kbps. EDGE Compact is a version for D-AMPS networks using a smaller spectrum.
