“DID Extension” or “DID Station” refers to a feature in a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) system, which is a private telephone network used within an organization. DID stands for Direct Inward Dialing. This feature allows a specific telephone within the PBX system to be directly reached from the public telephone network without the need for the call to be routed through an operator or an automated attendant system.
In a typical PBX setup without DID, incoming calls are usually answered by a human operator or an auto-attendant (an automated system that provides a menu of options), who then directs the call to the appropriate extension within the organization. However, with DID, each phone or extension within the PBX has its own unique phone number that can be dialed from outside the organization, directly connecting the caller to that specific extension.
This functionality is particularly useful for businesses as it enhances efficiency and customer service. Callers can directly reach the person or department they need to speak with, without going through intermediary steps. It also saves time for both the caller and the organization’s staff, as calls are routed automatically to their intended destinations.
