Mobile Radio for Railways Networks in Europe (MORANE) is a European project funded by the European Union with the goal of creating a standardized digital radio system for railway communication across Europe. The project involved collaboration among 32 railway companies to select and implement an appropriate digital technology for rail traffic communication.
After evaluating various digital technologies, the project participants chose to adopt Global System for Mobile (GSM) technology, specifically tailored to meet the specific needs of railway communication. This customized version of GSM is known as GSM-Rail or GSM-R.
GSM-R serves as a comprehensive platform for voice and data communication within railway networks. Additionally, it plays a critical role in traffic control through the implementation of the Electronic Train Control System (ETCS). This integrated system helps ensure safe and efficient railway operations by providing reliable communication capabilities for railway staff, including voice communication and data exchange.
By adopting GSM-R technology, European railway companies aimed to establish a standardized and interoperable communication system that enhances the safety, efficiency, and coordination of rail traffic across different countries and regions within Europe.
